Old Tolbooth Sunset

Photo: Old Tolbooth Sunset

Completed in 1770, the tolbooth on Lerwick’s Commercial Street was once the main public building for Lerwick. The original rooms included a pair of prison cells, courtroom, school room, and an assembly room. Over the years it’s hosted branches of the Post Office, Fishermen’s Mission, British Red Cross, Shetland Tourist Association, and Women’s Royal Voluntary Service. The building is now headquarters for the Lerwick Lifeboat Station - the blue and orange Lerwick lifeboat can be seen at the left of the photo.
