Making Helmets
Photographed above is Jim Nicolson, the Jarl’s father, creating fibre-glass shells for the squad’s helmets. I think it would only be right to describe Jim as an Up Helly Aa legend, having been Guizer Jarl in 1979 and steering the galley every year since 1963. His two other sons, Graham and John, are also heavily involved in Up Helly Aa - Graham was Guizer Jarl in 2007, and John is on the UHA committee and will be Guizer Jarl in 2019.
