Into the Sunrise
Was up early this morning - two thousand or so racing pigeons were released at Seafield in Lerwick today at 5.30am. The weather conditions were good with pretty much a perfect blue sky - just enough cloud in the east to allow me to get this shot. The birds do however face a light southerly headwind.
As I post this hundreds of pigeon fanciers in the south of England will be preparing for an anxious wait throughout the late afternoon and evening for the first returns. The winning bird last year took 11 hours to cover the 527 mile flight - a velocity of 1403ypm (yards per minute).
