I hadn’t been to a Bressay Up Helly Aa before. When I heard about the large squad they had this year, the dedication that had gone into the suits and galley, and the perfect weather forecast, I knew it was a great chance.
The suits were impressive, with purple cloaks (for the squad members), green kirtles, leather breastplates, chainmail, and decorative metalwork.
The side of the axes featured engraved runes copied from the side of the Bressay Stone - a sculpted stone found in Bressay thought to date from the 10th century.
